Georgia's Chief Rabbi Flees Country After Threat

(September 10, 2001)

Rabbi Ariel Levine, the Chief Rabbi of Georgia and the head of UCSJ's Georgia bureau, has fled to Israel with his family after police informed him that they had received credible information about a plan to kidnap him. Rabbi Levine plans on returning to Georgia as soon as the situation is safe. It is not clear who was planning to kidnap him or why, but kidnapping and other violent crimes are a serious problem in the country and throughout much of the Caucasus region.
