Racist Attack in Leningrad Region

A group of men robbed and beat Chinese construction workers in a Leningrad region town because one of the assailants mixed them up with Tajiks, according to a July 31, 2008 article posted on the web site of the national daily "Komsomolskaya Pravda." The attack took place in the village of Begunitsy. Three assailants burst into a school where Chinese construction crew were sleeping, beat them, and robbed them of phones and money. The suspects, the head of the local fire department and two unemployed men, were caught by police as they tried to sell the phones in the village. One suspect confessed that he had problems in the past with Tajiks and wanted revenge against them. They face charges of armed robbery.
