A prominent aide to Belarusian president Aleksandr Lukashenko continues to publish antisemitic material, according to a July 6, 2005 article in the leading independent Belarusian newspaper Belorusskaya Delovaya Gazeta. Eduard Skobelev, editor of the presidential administration’s official newsletter, has a long reputation for promoting antisemitism—in 1990, he proposed the use of guns to solve the "Jewish problem." At the same time, he was conferred the title "Honored Figure of Culture" by President Lukashenko in early 1997, and was later put in charge of a well-known literary journal called “Neman.”
A former Communist Party ideologue, Mr. Skobelev published articles in 2003 editions of “Neman” which claimed that “Jews always want to dominate” the countries in which they reside and “strive for world domination… because the Jewish character and the Jewish faith know no reasonable boundaries.” More recently, Mr. Skobelev published an article in “Neman” claiming that that the infamous antisemitic forgery, "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion," is genuine.
