A Jewish cemetery in the town of Mikashevich (Brest region) has been vandalized, according to a May 3, 2005 report by the AEN news service. Twenty gravestones in the cemetery were smashed by unidentified vandals. Some local Jews criticized police for not arresting any suspects, since the cemetery is located a few meters from a police station, and the act of vandalism was presumably rather noisy. Local police have allegedly dragged their feet investigating the crime, which if true, is not surprising, since no vandals of Jewish cemeteries have been arrested in the entire history of post-Soviet Belarus, despite several similar incidents.
