Zhitomir Security Police Close Investigation of Cemetery Incident

(April 22, 2008)

Police and SBU (former KGB) investigators announced that they solved an April 15 incident at a Jewish cemetery in Zhitomir, according to an April 22, 2008 report posted on Jewish.ru. For the second time in two years, a cemetery memorial over the grave of a famous local rabbi appeared to have suffered from vandalism--the memorial was burned down and antisemitic graffiti was reportedly left nearby. However, the explanation that the local police offered the press yesterday makes no mention of the graffiti. According to investigators, the fire was an accident rather than arson. Three teenagers were playing soccer near the cemetery and lit a fire on the cemetery grounds in order to warm up. The fire then got out of a control and burned down the memorial. It does not appear that they face any charges.
