Minsk Neo-Nazis Plan March to Commemorate Fallen Comrade

(March 22, 2005)

A group of neo-Nazis plan to march in the center of Minsk to mark the first anniversary of the killing of one of their comrades in Gomyol, according to a March 22, 2005 report by the AEN news agency. The extremists accuse Arab students of killing 18-year-old Alyaksandr Paplyovkin, whom the students say was killed in self-defense. The skinheads plan to demand that the students be "brought to justice" for the killing.

AEN reported that the group Support88 (the number 88 is international skinhead code for "Heil Hitler") declares on its web site its loyalty to the president of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko, whom they thank for ensuring that "Belarus remains the only bulwark against the empire of the New World Order." The group's site characterizes opponents of Lukashenko as servants of a Zionist conspiracy, headed up by the US (or as the skinheads call it, "The Zionist States of America").

Over the years, opposition groups have on several occasions accused the Belarus government of supporting neo-Nazi groups, or at least looking the other way when they attack opposition supporters.
