Support Emergency Rescue Fund

• The former Soviet Union is a volatile region. We at UCSJ believe that future emergencies, such as the Chechnya evacuation, will occur. Last year, when the crisis broke, we lacked sufficient funds to provide emergency aid - we were forced to raise thousands of dollars from our donors and lost valuable time.
• To prepare for future contingencies, UCSJ has created an Emergency Rescue Fund. This fund will provide necessary resources for urgent action on behalf of Jews in danger. It may involve emergency evacuation from a war zone, emergency humanitarian relief, or other urgent rescue efforts aimed at removing Jews from dangerous or potentially lethal situations.

• UCSJ is the only independent Western grassroots organiztion providing both advocacy to defend Jews and human rights in the former Soviet Union and the partnership Yad L'Yad programs that address the four principal categories of problems that threaten FSU Jews today -- Security, Sustenance, Freedom of Movement and Jewish Dignity and Knowledge.

• The Union of Councils for Soviet Jews (UCSJ) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Approximately two-thirds of our financial support is provided by the generosity of thousands of individual member-donors and dozens of family philanthropic funds. Additionally, in recent years, UCSJ has received government grants for human rights work from the National Endowment for Democracy and the Rule of Law Program of the U.S. Agency for International Development -- the U.S. foreign aid program; and has benefitted from the support, inter alia, of the Jackson, Koret, Levinson, MacArthur and Moriah foundations. UCSJ is wholly independent and thus receives (and requests) no funding from UJA-CJF allocations.

• For the Jews of Russia, the storm clouds are gathering. The influence of anti-Semites -- on the streets and in the corridors of power -- is growing alarmingly. Humanitarian and spiritual needs throughout the FSU are great. We cannot adequately continue the vital and unique work of a quarter century without your help.
