About the UCSJ

 The Union of Councils for Soviet Jews (UCSJ) was founded in 1970 as a coalition of local grassroots "action" councils supporting freedom for Jews in the Soviet Union. As the Soviet Jewry movement gathered steam in the 1970s, more councils were formed, more individuals became involved, and UCSJ grew to become the largest independent grassroots Soviet Jewry movement in the world.

Today, UCSJ comprises 23 councils in the United States, with affiliates in Canada, England, Norway, and Australia. UCSJ is headquartered in downtown Washington, DC; we also maintain an additional office in Highland Park, IL. Currently, UCSJ sponsors human rights bureaus in seven cities throughout the former Soviet Union: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Lviv (Ukraine), Riga (Latvia), Tbilisi (Georgia), Almaty (Kazakstan), and Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan). Funding and supervision of the St. Petersburg bureau are provided by the Bay Area Council for Jewish Rescue and Renewal.
